Reuniting your family in Germany means the joining spouse and children need valid health insurance from day one of their residence permit. Which system applies depends on the sponsoring resident's own insurance status.
If the sponsor is publicly insured (GKV)
A non-working spouse and children can usually be co-insured for free under Familienversicherung. This is typically the cheapest route for young families.
If the sponsor is privately insured (PHI)
PHI does not offer free family co-insurance. Each family member needs their own PHI tariff — but premiums for children are dramatically lower than for adults and often cheaper than a comparable GKV setup for higher-income households.
What the consulate wants to see
- Confirmation of coverage valid from arrival day.
- Inpatient + outpatient benefits.
- For children: paediatric cover and vaccinations.
- For pregnancy plans: maternity waiting periods clarified.
