What family reunification visas require

When a spouse or children join you in Germany under a family reunification visa (Familiennachzug), the German consulate requires proof of adequate health insurance for every joining family member. Private health insurance is accepted if the tariff is unlimited and covers inpatient, outpatient, dental and maternity care.

How family PHI is structured in Germany

Unlike statutory health insurance, German private health insurance does not offer free family co-insurance. Each family member gets their own policy — usually with individual risk-based premiums. In practice, child tariffs are affordable and can be tailored to match the parent's cover.

  • Individual policies for spouse and each child.
  • Child tariffs typically €120–€200 / month.
  • Comprehensive dental and orthodontic cover for children.
  • Maternity and midwife care covered.
  • Worldwide travel cover included in most tariffs.

Family reunification — FAQ

Does my spouse need their own private health insurance in Germany?

Yes. Unlike statutory insurance, private health insurance does not offer free family co-insurance. Each spouse and each child needs their own PHI policy — but individually tailored premiums often make total costs competitive.

Can children be insured privately in Germany?

Yes. Child tariffs in German PHI are typically affordable and include comprehensive outpatient, inpatient and dental cover. We help you choose a child tariff that matches the parent's policy.

Is private health insurance accepted for a family reunification visa?

Yes, provided the tariff is unlimited in duration and meets German consular requirements for inpatient and outpatient care. We select policies that are known to be accepted by the Ausländerbehörde.
