If you become unable to work in Germany, your income protection depends on which system you're in. Employees receive statutory sick pay from their employer for 6 weeks — after that, Krankentagegeld is what stands between you and financial pressure. For freelancers it kicks in from day one.

How Krankentagegeld works

You pick a daily rate (e.g. €150/day) and a waiting period (from day 15, 43, 92…). The insurer then pays that daily rate tax-free while you are certified unable to work.

The freelancer trap

Many freelancers skip Krankentagegeld to save €30/month — then discover after a slipped disc that their income stops after two weeks. A properly sized Krankentagegeld tariff typically costs 3–6% of the monthly income it replaces.

Right-sizing your daily rate

  • Employees: aim to bridge from week 7 (end of employer continuation) to expected recovery.
  • Freelancers: choose a start day that matches your emergency reserve.
  • Never over-insure — insurers only pay up to your average net income.
