German dentistry is excellent — but public health insurance only covers the basics. If you value your teeth (or wear braces, or expect an implant one day), understanding your options here pays off literally.

What GKV actually pays for

Standard fillings, basic check-ups and basic dentures at ~60% of a fixed reference cost. Everything above — porcelain crowns, implants, professional cleanings, orthodontics for adults — is out of pocket.

What PHI covers

  • Preventive cleanings: typically 100%.
  • Fillings and inlays: 80–100%.
  • Crowns and bridges: 80–90%.
  • Implants and orthodontics: 70–90% up to a cap.

Alternative: dental supplement (Zahnzusatzversicherung)

If you keep GKV, a dental supplement (€15–€40/month) can top up cover to 80–90% for major work — with waiting periods.

Nobody enjoys dealing with the topic of insurance. With Ms. Fröhlich by my side that has changed: perfect advice tailored individually to me, always reliable — without ever building any pressure. On top of that, Ms. Fröhlich works in an extremely service-oriented way. Compared to online services, she offers real added value. In short: I'm thrilled. Thank you so much!
