For international students, Germany offers a student-rate GKV and — in specific cases — PHI. The right choice depends mostly on your age at enrolment.

Under 30 / within first 14 semesters

Student rate GKV is around €130/month all-in. Simple, cheap, universally accepted. This is usually the default recommendation.

Over 30 or after 14 semesters

You lose the student rate. Voluntary GKV can cost €200–€250/month; PHI student tariffs can be significantly cheaper if you are healthy.

PhD candidates and postdoc researchers

If you are employed on a research contract, you follow the employee rules (JAEG threshold). If you have a scholarship, you are treated as self-employed for insurance purposes — PHI is often the pragmatic route.

Nobody enjoys dealing with the topic of insurance. With Ms. Fröhlich by my side that has changed: perfect advice tailored individually to me, always reliable — without ever building any pressure. On top of that, Ms. Fröhlich works in an extremely service-oriented way. Compared to online services, she offers real added value. In short: I'm thrilled. Thank you so much!
