PHI premiums rising each year is a real frustration — but you are not stuck. Under § 204 of the German Insurance Contract Act (Versicherungsvertragsgesetz, VVG) you have a statutory right to move to a comparable, cheaper tariff at the same insurer while keeping your ageing reserves (Altersrückstellungen). Most policyholders don't use it.

What § 204 VVG actually guarantees

You can request a switch to any equivalent tariff offered by your current insurer. The insurer must accept — with no new health check for the equivalent portion of the cover. Your accumulated ageing reserves come with you.

How much can you save?

Real cases we've handled: €180/month saved on a 41-year-old freelancer, €240/month on a 52-year-old employee, both without downgrading essential benefits. Savings come from newer tariff generations, revised deductibles and modular benefit design.

What to watch out for

  • Never let the insurer 'guide' you into a discontinued (closed) tariff — closed tariffs age badly.
  • Health-check-free is only guaranteed for equivalent benefits — any upgrade portion needs underwriting.
  • Don't cancel your existing policy before the new one starts.
